I’m not asking for a homework pass. I have been assigned to write a book review on my opinion and what I liked about The Bhagavad Gita. I have read the book and it sounds true and has interesting and unique ideas but that is about all it does for me. I only have one page written & it is supposed to be 3. HELP! What was your opinion on the Gita? What specific parts or chapters did you find interesting?

I read the Gita every once in a while. I’m intrigued by many of its teachings, especially that of acting without attachment to the act.
I have one problem with the Gita, and it’s a big one. In the first chapter, Krishna tells Arjuna that it’s okay to kill members of his family who are on the opposing side of the war. Krishna says it’s okay because the soul, which is the essence of a human being, can never be destroyed, even if the body can.
I can’t quite come to terms with condoning murder.
That war took place around 3,000 B.C. In those days, when a husband and father died, his family’s very survival was stake. If an unmarried man died, that might be the end of a family’s name. And Krishna says it’s okay to do this to your own family!
If nothing else, no one has a right to interfere with another person’s karma. Murder prevents one from becoming wiser and more devoted, and perhaps burning off some karma, which would bring him closer to leaving the cycle of Samsara.
Yet, at the same time, my favorite line is:
“Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings, nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.” (2.12)
i think bible, geeta, kuran and these kind of books are encrypted message for enlightened souls.it is not in rhe straight forward language it contains deep meaning which we have to explore with more and more knowledge of the self and this world also.
as per the say arjun was one of the most powerful person in society and the person who is of higher authority or person can not take proper decisions then who will.
just the culprit is ur brother or relative or friend u close ur eyes end then he does the thing again and again and ruins this society or u can say this beautiful world.
its like high court evicts a culprit of serios crimes knowing that he is indeed a culprit.
krishna asked arjuna to fight for dharama, right cause against his brothers and beloved ones as per me nothing wrong and ofcourse it was a battlefield whre one will die in fighting either arjun or his beloved ones.
also before war he offers piece also by asking only five villages from a huge kingdom which was birthright of pandavas.but because of selfishness, egoproblem, envy, bad company etc this simple demand was refused to call upon the biggest war of that time where enemy party wanted to kill pandvas in battlefield. there were several attempts before also on pandvas life like trying to get them trapped in fire and so on therefore i think it becomes matter of self protection and existence.
only the body is destroyed soul changes body and then starts a fresh journy nobody can kill u only transforms u from one form to another form of matter.
read more more and with more experiences in life u will understand true meaning of verses of these books wich r written for only good cause of not only human but this whole universe also.
above written are my views and if any thing wrong or hurts u i say soory for that. thans!
Diana P behaves like a Christian missionary who have an axe to grind. The Gita absolutely does NOT advocate murder and killing. Witness the following verses:
BG 13.8-12: Humility; pridelessness; nonviolence; tolerance; … — all these I declare to be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance.
BG 16.1-3: …. cultivation of spiritual knowledge; charity; self-control; simplicity; nonviolence; truthfulness; freedom from anger; …forgiveness; fortitude; … — these transcendental qualities, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature.
BG 17.14-17: Austerity of the body consists in worship of the Supreme Lord, …and in cleanliness, simplicity, celibacy and nonviolence….is called austerity in goodness.
The advise given to Arjuna is on a metaphysical level, in terms of Dharma. Now figure this out, but you will need more intelligence than what you seem to display.
Gita is not a book for perusing over a cup or more of tea but a dialogue to be read, reread, thought about, practised and even asking the ‘Bhagwan’ there to reveal Himself to you in all humility. Your evaluation is not going to add or subtract from it in anyway, please realize that to enlighten the eternal path of your soul.
Please read also the following and use your brains:
BG 13.8-12: Humility; pridelessness; nonviolence; tolerance; simplicity; approaching a bona fide spiritual master; cleanliness; steadiness; self-control; renunciation of the objects of sense gratification; absence of false ego; the perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease; detachment; freedom from entanglement with children, wife, home and the rest; even-mindedness amid pleasant and unpleasant events; constant and unalloyed devotion to Me; aspiring to live in a solitary place; detachment from the general mass of people; accepting the importance of self-realization; and philosophical search for the Absolute Truth — all these I declare to be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance.
One of the greatest contributions of India to the world is Holy Gita
which is considered to be one of the first revelations from God. The
spiritual philosophy and management lessons in this holy book were
brought in to light of the world by many great Indian saint’s effort
and they call the Bhagavad-Gita the essence of Vedic Literature and a
complete guide to practical life. It provides “all that is needed to
raise the consciousness of man to the highest possible level” and Self
improvement means self guided improvement in physical, mental, social
spiritual and emotion.
Maharishi reveals the deep, universal truths of life that speak to the
needs and aspirations of everyone. The followers in your
establishment are continuing the mission by keeping this lantern
burning always knowing the wishes of the modern generations. Arjuna
got mentally depressed when he saw his relatives with whom he has to
fight.( Mental health has become a major international public health
concern now). To motivate him the Bhagavad-Gita is preached in the
battle field Kurukshetra by Lord Krishna to Arjuna as counseling to do
his duty while multitudes of men stood by waiting. Arjuna face the
problem of conflict between emotions and intellect. In almost all of
the cases, emotions win. Gita teaches Honesty, Sincerity, Truthfulness
etc. so that one gets peace of mind to face all situation.
