Gita Jnana Yagna - Day 3: Monday, 20th Jan 1997 The Lord tells Arjuna, that both of them have been born many times and met each other many times. But the Lord is aware of everything and Arjuna is not. First, what is the form of the Paramatma who reincarnates? What is the form of the incarnation? Why does he incarnate? What do we get if we know this? That paramatma who incarnates, What is his form? The word Ajahah means one who is never born. No one in this world was ever born! None of us either remember being born or our birth experience. So why can't we accept that we were never born? A little girl came to Swamiji and he told her "You are a bad girl". But he said it with a smile and she thought that it was something good. So anything at all can be taught to a person, even if it is wrong. Similarly, we are taught that we were born. Our birthday is celebrated year after year and we begin to believe that we were born. One who is not born will be very happy, because he will never die!! The Lord is also Avyayahah. This means one who has no Vikara or no change in form. He is the Ishwara or Lord of all creatures. We are the lords of our eyes. We can open our eyes and close it when we want. How great it would be if we can control all our senses and especially the mind. An Ishwara is one who is never unhappy. So Lord is Ajahah, Avyayahah and Ishwara. The fire's qualities of heat and warmth don't have any reason. It is its nature. If we accept the nature of all bodies then we won't have any problems. In Mundakopanishad, it is said that there are two types of people. There are 2 birds sitting in a pippala tree. One is constantly pecking fruits and the other stays put and shines in glory. For the bird who keeps pecking, if the fruit is sweet, the bird is happy and when it is sour, the bird is unhappy. But the other bird is free from experience and it remains happy at all times. We are not happy or sad due to fate. It is not due to God or others but due to our own acceptance of it. If we think we are sad, even God cannot make us happy. We should learn to encash our fear of death. Every experience in life, good or bad, gets value, if we learn anything at all from it. When Valmiki was Ratanakara, he committed many sins. But he learnt from it and became one of the greatest sages. So, as long as we learn, every second of life is spent spiritually. Death is not what causes fear. It is fear itself that causes fear. There is nothing to fear than fear itself. There was a family. It consisted of a husband and wife in their thirties, their daughter and the husband's mother. They stayed in a small apartment. The back room was the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom etc. and the husband, wife and their daughter stayed there. In the front was a big room where the mother stayed. She never let anybody enter and they had constant Kurukshetra war in the house. The Daughter in law (DIL) came to Swamiji and complained. He said "Your Mother in law (MIL) causes you worry, So kill her. Then your problem is solved.". She did not accept. So he said, "Then ask your husband to kill her". Again she did not accept. "Then you die". Definitely, she was not going to accept this. He then told her to leave the house. This was also not possible. So he told her, "You have no option but to stay here. So why should you cry and stay. Be happy". He then told her that her MIL was going to die in a year's time. So she just had to adjust till then. The DIL went away. Whenever they had fights, the DIL used to count 365, 364 etc. So, slowly she stopped retaliating and the MIL also became friendly and stopped fighting. Later, Swamiji went to their place and he asked the DIL, "How many days left". But she was ashamed and thanked Swamiji and said that all their fights had been due to the fact that they had never understood each other. When she treated the problem patiently, they began to understand each other and coexisted peacefully and happily. Unless there is death, there won't be any space to live.We don't have birth or death, we simply remain where God has placed us. This is Ajopisan. Talking of Avyayatma, Swamiji said; Whenever something bad happens we become sad. If we have any disease we should not be sad, but should be happy that we are alive. If we are dead, we won't have pain at all!! Everybody has some problem. People keep asking Swamiji, "How are you?" When a person asked this to Swami Chinmayananda, he said, "Come and ask me quietly. Let not the body hear it. How I am is the body's prerogative. I can only stay and watch" When we are slaves, we are sad. There is happiness only in freedom. But we believe freedom is doing whatever we feel like. If we don't control our speech, we repent whatever we say later. When a person is able to control his mind, body and senses, he is respected. That person who controls his mind controls the world. A lady went to Swami Akandanand and told him, "Unlike some other people, you don't do miracles". The Swami said, "But, I do" and then explained. "When did you start coming here?". She said she had been coming for 10 years. The Swami then asked her "How was your mind then and now?. She said that she had learnt a lot and had been saved by him from a path of meaningless existence. He said, " A person is capable of changing or improving another only if he has control over himself.. Saints are able to bring about change in others only because they have full control over their mind and have the power to change others' mind. This is called aishwarya. It is possible for everyone to awaken this aishwarya. Then the Lord says, "Prakritim Swamadishtaya". I take my own Prakriti (nature) and using my own Maya, I manifest myself (sambhavami)... The Lord's prakriti are the 5 bhootas, mind, intellect and ahankara known as apara prakriti. The jiva bhuta is known as the para prakriti. There is a one day international match between these two and the Lord is the umpire. Keeping these two in control, the Lord manifests himself with his Maya. We can see only what is in front of us but cannot see what is behind us. If we assume that only what we see is what is there, it will be incomplete. A complete description is one that combines what we see, with what we do not see. So, what we describe based on the perception of our senses alone is incomplete. Electricity manifests itself as light in different lamps. Similarly petrol can manifest itself as power in different vehicles. The power is not seen in the electricity but the lamp. Similarly the paramatma manifests himself through various senses and what we just see, hear or talk is not paramatma. He is more than that. When we say the name of God, he manifests through the mouth. When we see a person as God, he manifests through sight. Lord, manifests through his Maya. When does God manifest? The Lord says, "Yada Yada hi dharmasya Glanir bhavathi.....". Dharma does not get destroyed by itself. The Lord means that when the righteousness in the people gets destroyed, then Dharma is on the decline. When a person starts doubting the path of righteousness, then Dharma is on the decline. When Swamiji went abroad, he was wearing Saffron robes. A person told Swamiji to change. Swamiji said, "If I dress like others, then no one will look at me!!". The person said, "But, Swami, It does not look good". Swamiji asked "To whom?" So, one should be clear about the path one takes. Swamiji follows a vegetarian diet and often eats only fruits and nothing else. About this, he jokingly said, "I do not like nuts, of any kind!!" If we are vegetarians and doubt our path itself, then there is decline. As long as we do not doubt what we do, then we will have improvement. Otherwise there is decline. Such a person can't do good either to himself or others. So, Lord manifests as Avatars to keep people on the path of righteousness. There was a king and he had a minister. The minister always used to say "By the will of God, everything is for the Good". The king died and his son became the King. One day, the king went hunting in the forest. He had an accident and he lost a finger. The minister said, "By the will of God, everything is for the Good". The king was very upset and he ordered that the minister should be jailed. Once again the minister said, "By the will of God, everything is for the Good". A few days later, the King again went hunting. This time he was caught by cannibals and was about to be sacrificed. Just before he was cut, the cannibals noticed that he did not have a finger and hence decided that he was not worthy of sacrifice and they let him go. The King came back to his kingdom, and freed his minister. He apologized to him and said, "I can understand why you said that statement when I fell. But why did you say the same, when I jailed you?". The minister replied, "If I had not been jailed, I would have also been caught by the cannibals and they would have sacrificed me!!". So whatever happens in Life, God has a reason. Lord can take avatar in any form and does so. The Latest avatars of God, according to Swamiji, are statements on the back of Indian trucks!! If we can get a message from any incident, even a passing truck, the God takes avatar in our mind. Once Swamiji was distressed. He was traveling in a car.The driver inquired about his bad mood and Swamiji replied "Mind your business". As they were driving, he noticed a message behind the truck in front of them, "Buri nazarwale, Apne nazar test karale" instead of the usual "tera mooh kala". So everything is how we see it. Once Swamiji went to a school and was teaching the kids. One kid asked Swamiji to close his eyes and told him that he had a gift for Swamiji. The gift was a bookmark with the following quotation by Swami Vivekananda; "Great achievements are possible only through great sacrifice". Even this message can be taken as an avatar of God. Wherever and whenever we perceive God, there is an avatar of God. Many times in our lives, we are steered from the path of self destruction by some event. These are nothing but avatars of God. Once a man died and went to Kailash. He had done some punya and so Shiva told him that he will give him a letter to Kubera and asked him to go to Kubera. On seeing him, Kubera told him to go to the treasury and take whatever he wanted, within an hour's time. He went in, saw and decided that he will first see everything, because he could not make up his mind. One hour passed and he still had not made any choice. But he had run out of time and had to come out. As he was coming out, he saw some peanuts and he grabbed it. Finally, due to his indecision, this is all that he got. In life, we are so busy looking around that we do not gain anything. "Abyukthanam Adharmasya" Not only do we start doubting the path of Dharma, but also start pondering about the benefits of Adharma. Once when Swamiji was very young, he thought of traveling in a train without a ticket. But, at the station, he saw a board which said that ticket less travel is a big sin. Immediately, he bought a ticket. On that day, there was a ticket checking squad and 10 or 12 people in his own compartment were arrested. He could not help but thank God for saving him. When we are corrected by such incidents, we can conclude that God has taken avatar. "Paritranaya Sadhoonam" Protecting the virtuous is the primary objective and killing the bad is only secondary. When we wash clothes, it is first for making it clean and then only for removing dirt. Rama was not born for killing Ravana. It was for appearing to the sages who were doing penance. Killing Ravana and Kumbakarana was a secondary objective. We keep cows for milk and not for cow dung. Cow dung is only secondary. Saving the virtuous is the prime cause. So one should not wonder, "Why does God not appear now? There are so many bad people and God should take avatar to kill them!!". When there are enough Good people in this earth and they need protection, then God will manifest. Explaining who a Sadhu is, Swamiji said that a Sadhu is one who goes in the path of Dharma. Once a Sadhu was traveling in a boat. There were four people in the boat who were very troublesome. A voice was heard, 'Shall I tilt this boat". The Sadhu said "God, If you should tilt something, tilt their minds and make them good". Suppose God had not supported and made Arjuna understand that he had to fight, the Kauravas would have won the battle and Adharma would be flourishing. "Yuge Yuge" Yuga means simultaneously. Twins are born simultaneously. Paramatma is born side by side with all the badness in the world. When we see goodness all around, we say God is great. There is nothing great about this. If we are able to see God even in the bad events around us, then we understand God and become closer to God. Whenever bad events happen, only then we realize and go closer to God. In every second of our life, God manifests himself. Once Swamiji traveled 4000 kms covering six states, by a scooter, because, his Guru told him to get certain things done. While traveling, God protected him in so many incidents. He was always there, helping Swamiji and the job required by his Guru was 100% complete. Unless God wills, even an atom can't be moved. There is a saying "Khudah meharban tho Gaddhha Pehalwan". If God wills thus, even a donkey can be a wrestler. One who understands the divinity of the Lord's birth and activities, becomes free from the cycle of Life and death. We are born and have activities. But we are burdened by bondage. God also has births and activities, but he is not bound. The difference is that God has the freedom, but we have no choice. In a jail, a jailer has a choice but the prisoners are compelled to stay. That bondage which is self accepted is freedom. Swamiji has appeared in Bahrain by choice. He wears a saffron robe, by choice. He is not compelled to come here. But if we are forced by our job, then we are bonded. In Calcutta people work from 10 to 5 from home to home. (Meaning, they leave home only at 10 and return by 5). A mother takes care of her child by choice. However if she does the same in a crèche or a hospital, then it is bondage and she has to do it by compulsion. A Guru never forces his students. Many people asked Swami Chinmayananda how his disciples go and lecture without permission. Swamiji said "Where is any question of permission? They don't speak. I do through them. We have to be born again, if we do not pay back a debt to a person. We cannot misappropriate. Sons who spend father's money are debtors from previous lives. If we kill someone or hate someone in our lives, then we cannot escape the cycle of rebirth. On the other hand, The Lord's activities do not have any fruit for him. So it is not work at all. The Lord gets nothing from it and he stays here by choice and not compulsion. If we lose differences from our mind and have love for everybody, we treat everyone with love. When Chaitanya mahaprabhu was going towards the Lord, he was traveling through the Forest. All the animals in the jungle, even those that were natural enemies, traveled together, following him. This was because of the love in his heart. If we understand this truth, there is no life or death and we become one with God. |
