Nothing Feared, Never Pained – Dhyana Yoga 22

In this post, we continue descrbing the state of contentment that a Yogi attains through meditation..

यं लब्ध्वा चापरं लाभं मन्यते नाधिकं ततः ।
यस्मिन्स्थितो न दुःखेन गुरुणापि विचाल्यते ॥६- २२॥

yaM labdhvaa chaaparaM laabhaM manyate naadhikaM tataH .
yasminsthito na duHkhena guruNaapi vichaalyate .. 6.22..

And having obtained this state, the yogi does not think of any happinessother gain as greater than this state and he is so established in this state that he is not shaken by the heaviest of sorrows.

yaM – which: laabhaM – gain (in the form of God realization) : labdhvaa – having obtained : aparaM - any other : na manyate – does not consider : adhikaM tataH - greater than that : cha – and : yasmin.h sthitaH - established in which : guruNaa duHkhena api - even by the heaviest sorrows: na vichaalyate - is not shaken

If a person gets the taste of sweets, then just eating sugar will not be satisfactory to him. When he gets 1000 dollars then 10 dollars is not of value to him. A person who lives in a big house will not want to go and live in a single room. If this is the case even with material objects that are fleeting in value, imagine the state of the eternal happiness of God realization! When such contentment is reached by the Yogi, it is so great that everything else seems trivial.

A person might get pleasure from eating and sleeping. But sooner or later, he gets bored of taamasik joy, and then starts running after those things that satiate the senses. Even this raajasik joy gets boring when a person savors the happiness of devotion to God. The happiness of God realization is superior to even this saattvik joy and therefore it is superior to everything else. Having attained this, the yogi will not feel that there is anything else that is comparable to this.

In this shloka, the yogi is also said to be unshaken even by the greatest sorrows. Even if he is bodily harmed or somebody who is very close to him becomes sick or even dies, he is not affected. This can be illustrated from the lives of many great saints such as Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Even when he was seriously ailing, it was never an impediment for him or caused him concern. This is possible because the yogi is now totally identified with God and so he is not affected by anything that happens to the body. All the contacts with this world are only superficial and he has become above all these and hence sorrow which is caused due to this attachment cannot affect him.
