Never Look down! – Dhyana Yoga 29

In our last post we talked about God realization and goal realization and illustrated this with relation to the mythological story of Satyavan and Savitri. Once a yogi realizes God, what will his attitude be? There is a famous quote by Jesse Jackson that says “Never look down on anybody unless you’re helping him up”.. helping-handThe Yogi’s attitude is to “never look down” and it is explained in the following Sloka..

सर्वभूतस्थमात्मानं सर्वभूतानि चात्मनि ।
ईक्षते योगयुक्तात्मा सर्वत्र समदर्शनः ॥६- २९॥

sarvabhuutasthamaatmaanaM sarvabhuutaani chaatmani .
iikshate yogayuktaatmaa sarvatra samadarshanaH .. 6.29..

This yogi who has become one with God, sees the same everywhere . He sees the self in all beings and sees all beings in the self.

yogayuktaatmaa – this yogi who has become one with God : sarvatra – everywhere : samadarshanaH - sees the same: aatmaanaM – the self : sarva bhuutasthaM - present in all beings : cha - and : sarva bhuutaani - all beings : aatmani – in his self : iikshate – he sees.

The yogi who has become one with God realizes that the God who is present in him is also present in all creatures and all objects everywhere around him. Whether we make a rasagolla or gulaab jaamun or burfi, the basic ingredient required is sugar. Whether gold is made into bangles, rings, necklaces or any ornament, though the shapes, sizes and uses are different, they all contain gold and ultimately reduce to gold. Similarly all men, women and animals contain the same self within and the yogi realizes this.

Some people feel that they are very superior and that everybody else is inferior. This is because of ignorance and it is born out of ego. Once a politician was forced to stand in a queue at the airport and he decided to show his importance. So he cut the queue, went to the counter and told the lady there, “You have to serve me first. Do you know who I am”. The lady did not reply. Instead, she took the mike and announced. “Can anyone please help this man. He does not know who he is”. There is so much inequality only because some people see others as inferior to themselves and they always consider themselves superior. This attitude must be changed.

We often see ourselves in people whom we like. Parents see themselves in their children. Once a proud man told his wife, “: I think our son gets all his brains from me..”. She replied, “Probably – I still have all mine intact.”

We have a capacity to see ourselves in people whom we like or admire, but a yogi is one who is able to see himself in all beings because he realizes that they are all children of God and hence has the same attitude to everyone.

This is also explained in chapter V, Verse 18, wherein the lord says that a realized man treats a cow, a brahmin, elephant a dog and dog eater in the same manner (vidyaa vinaya sampanne braahmaNe gavi hastini, shuuni chaiva shvapaake cha paNditaaH samadarshinaH). The yogi sees himself in others. He does not treat anyone as inferior and treats everyone equally.
