देवता और असुर
devatā aura asura

अभयं सत्त्वसंशुद्धिर्ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः।
दानं दमश्च यज्ञश्च स्वाध्यायस्तप आर्जवम्‌॥ १६-१॥
abhayaṁ sattvasaṁśuddhirjñānayogavyavasthitiḥ |
dānaṁ damaśca yajñaśca svādhyāyastapa ārjavam || 16-1||

अहिंसा सत्यमक्रोधस्त्यागः शान्तिरपैशुनम्‌।
दया भूतेष्वलोलुप्त्वं मार्दवं ह्रीरचापलम्‌॥ १६-२॥
ahiṁsā satyamakrodhastyāgaḥ śāntirapaiśunam |
dayā bhūteṣvaloluptvaṁ mārdavaṁ hrīracāpalam || 16-2||

तेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता।
भवन्ति सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातस्य भारत॥ १६-३॥
tejaḥ kṣamā dhṛtiḥ śaucamadroho nātimānitā |
bhavanti sampadaṁ daivīmabhijātasya bhārata || 16-3||

भय-हीनता दम सत्त्व की संशुद्धि दृढ़ता ज्ञान की॥
तन-मन सरलता यज्ञ तप स्वाध्याय सात्त्विक दान भी॥ १६। १॥
bhaya-hīnatā dama sattva kī saṁśuddhi dṛṛhatā jñāna kī ||
tana-mana saralatā yajña tapa svādhyāya sāttvika dāna bhī || 16| 1 ||

मृदुता अहिंसा सत्य करुणा शान्ति क्रोध-विहीनता॥
लज्जा अचंचलता अनिन्दा त्याग तृष्णाहीनता॥ १६। २॥
mṛdutā ahiṁsā satya karuṇā śānti krodha-vihīnatā ||
lajjā acaṁcalatā anindā tyāga tṛṣṇāhīnatā || 16| 2 ||

धृति तेज पावनता क्षमा अद्रोह मान-विहीनता॥
ये चिन्ह उनके पार्थ जिनको प्राप्त दैवी-सम्पदा॥ १६। ३॥
dhṛti teja pāvanatā kṣamā adroha māna-vihīnatā ||
ye cinha unake pārtha jinako prāpta daivī-sampadā || 16| 3 ||

Fearlessness, singleness of soul, the will
Always to strive for wisdom; opened hand
And governed appetites; and piety,
And love of lonely study; humbleness,
Uprightness, heed to injure nought which lives,
Truthfulness, slowness unto wrath, a mind
That lightly letteth go what others prize;
And equanimity, and charity
Which spieth no man’s faults; and tenderness
Towards all that suffer; a contented heart,
Fluttered by no desires; a bearing mild,
Modest, and grave, with manhood nobly mixed,
With patience, fortitude, and purity;
An unrevengeful spirit, never given
To rate itself too high;- such be the signs,
O Indian Prince! of him whose feet are set
On that fair path which leads to heavenly birth!

दम्भो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च।
अज्ञानं चाभिजातस्य पार्थ सम्पदमासुरीम्‌॥ १६-४॥
dambho darpo’bhimānaśca krodhaḥ pāruṣyameva ca |
ajñānaṁ cābhijātasya pārtha sampadamāsurīm || 16-4||

मद मान मिथ्याचार क्रोध कठोरता अज्ञान भी॥
ये आसुरी सम्पत्ति में जन्मे हु पाते सभी॥ १६। ४॥
mada māna mithyācāra krodha kaṭhoratā ajñāna bhī ||
ye āsurī sampatti meṁ janme hue pāte sabhī || 16| 4 ||

Deceitfulness, and arrogance, and pride,
Quickness to anger, harsh and evil speech,
And ignorance, to its own darkness blind,-
These be the signs, My Prince! of him whose birth
Is fated for the regions of the vile.

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः।
कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्‌॥ १६-२१॥
trividhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśanamātmanaḥ |
kāmaḥ krodhastathā lobhastasmādetattrayaṁ tyajet || 16-21||

ये काम लालच क्रोध तीनों ही नरक के द्वार हैं॥
इस हेतु तीनों आत्म-नाशक त्याज्य सर्व प्रकार हैं॥ १६। २१॥
ye kāma lālaca krodha tīnoṁ hī naraka ke dvāra haiṁ ||
isa hetu tīnoṁ ātma-nāśaka tyājya sarva prakāra haiṁ || 16| 21 ||

The Doors of Hell
Are threefold, whereby men to ruin pass,-
The door of Lust, the door of Wrath, the door
Of Avarice. Let a man shun those three!

क्रोधाद्भवति सम्मोहः सम्मोहात्स्मृतिविभ्रमः।
स्मृतिभ्रंशाद्‌ बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति॥ २-६३॥
krodhādbhavati sammohaḥ sammohātsmṛtivibhramaḥ |
smṛtibhraṁśād buddhināśo buddhināśātpraṇaśyati || 2-63||

फिर क्रोध से है मोह सुधि को मोह करता भ्रष्ट है।
यह सुधि ग फिर बुद्धि विनशे बुद्धि-विनशे नष्ट है॥ २। ६३॥
phira krodha se hai moha sudhi ko moha karatā bhraṣṭa hai |
yaha sudhi gae phira buddhi vinaśe buddhi-vinaśe naṣṭa hai || 2| 63||

Desire flames to fierce passion, passion breeds
Recklessness; then the memory- all betrayed-
Lets noble purpose go, and saps the mind,
Till purpose, mind, and man are all undone.

शक्नोतीहैव यः सोढुं प्राक्‍शरीरविमोक्षणात्‌।
कामक्रोधोद्भवं वेगं स युक्तः स सुखी नरः॥ ५-२३॥
śaknotīhaiva yaḥ soḍhuṁ prākśarīravimokṣaṇāt |
kāmakrodhodbhavaṁ vegaṁ sa yuktaḥ sa sukhī naraḥ || 5-23||

जो काम-क्रोधावेग सहता है मरण पर्यन्त ही।
संसार में योगी वही नर सुख सदा पाता वही॥ ५। २३॥
jo kāma-krodhāvega sahatā hai maraṇa paryanta hī |
saṁsāra meṁ yogī vahī nara sukha sadā pātā vahī || 5| 23||

But if a man shall learn,
Even while he lives and bears his body’s chain,
To master lust and anger, he is blest!
He is the Yukta; he hath happiness.
