In traditional Indian culture, knowledge has passed on from generation to generation by the revered and greatly treasured guru-shishya parampara. The learning that is transmitted from a guru (teacher, गुरू) to a ‘śhishya’ (disciple, शिष्य) could be vedic, artistic (music / dance), spiritual or even martial. Even kings and rulers have had to spend years at the houses of mentors / Gurus where they have traditionally performed all the chores and service to their Gurus ad have learned at the behest of the Guru. This relationship between the Guru and Shishya has been based on the genuineness of the guru, and the respect, commitment, devotion and obedience of the student. In this fashion, the greatest and most subtle knowledge has been passed such that the student eventually is even able to take on the mantle of the master.
In today’s quiz, we have brought together some of the greatest Gurus and their disciples from Hindu mythology. Each question has a story behind it and many interesting incidents between these teachers and their students are available in the treasure troves of our mythology.
Go ahead and test your knowledge on the “Gurus & Shishyas”. As always do let us know how you do and whether you enjoyed the quiz or not, for we love to hear from you.
The winner of the “Hills & Mountains” Quiz is Lalitha (my mom, who this time managed to beat the difficult quiz with a perfect 10).
Happy Quizzing!

Thanks for this interesting and informative quiz! All the best for future efforts. My Guru is definitely not going to be happy about my score- it is 7/10. I don’t want my daughter or wife to know this.
Pranams.
Sorry Ganesh – Just tell them to not look at the comment. Anyway, honesty is a great quality and our Guruji will certainly appreciate that!;)

finally succeeded today in anwering the quiz. I scored 7 out of 10.
this quiz has come after a long time I think
I attempted the Guru Shishya quiz.. it was nice, but as per me, King Janak’s (father of sita) guru was not ashtavakra.
It was another King Janak who became disciple of Sage Ashtavakra.
King Janak’s guru was the son of sage gautam and ahilya.
Please do respond me,.. if i am wrong.
Dear Vedika
Thanks for trying my quiz at Gitaaonline. You have raised an interesting question – While none of these aspects of mythology can be truly confirmed, please see the reference belowhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janaka on Janaka. As per this source and many others, Ashtavakra was the teacher of King Janaka.
