After a brief Hiatus, we have come back with a new Quiz for our readers.. In Hindu mythology, Mountains have traditionally been regarded as abodes of Gods and a symbol of strength. Some mountains and rivers have special significance within Hinduism and are held sacred due to their association with deities and legends.

In this edition, we showcase some unique and relatively little known facts about some famous mountains that have a pride of place in Hinduism.

It is said when the wedding of Lord Shiva and Parvathi was announced, all the Gods, rishis and people migrated north to the Himalayas. As a result, the earth went off balance and became wobbly dangerously. With disaster looming, Lord Shiva asked a saint to go south and balance the situation through meditation. Which mountain are we talking about?





As per the legends, this mountain came into existence when Nandini, Sage Vashishta's wish-fulfilling cow, fell into a deep lake. Sage Vashishta appealed to the Gods for help, who sent Arbuda, the celestial cobra. Arbuda, carried a huge rock on his head & dropped it into the lake, displacing the water thus rescuing Nandini.





In Tibetian, Gang Rinpoche means "precious jewel of snows",and this mountain peak is considered sacred by four religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bön faith. This might be the reason that the mountain has never been climbed. This Mount also houses the headwaters of some of the longest rivers in Asia, the Indus and the Brahmaputra.





This mountain peak in the Western Ghats in South India forms a picturesque background to the famous temple of Mookambika in Kollur.. The name is a corruption of the Sanskrit word "Kutakachalam." This is the highest peak in Shimoga District. At the peak it is believed that 'Shankaracharya' did meditation.





The Tirumala Hills (also known as Saptagiri in Sanskrit) comprise of seven peaks - Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, .............., Narayanadri and Venkatadri, with the temple actually located on the seventh peak, Venkatadri. Which is the missing peak?





Which mountain bears on its summit Brahma’s heaven, and acts as a pivot for the three worlds around which the heavenly bodies revolve.





This revered mountain in the Himalayas and home to Goddess Durga was thought to be the only one mighty enough to serve as a pole in the churning of the milk ocean. Which mountain are we referring to?





The presiding deity atop this hill is always anointed with sandalwood paste giving the appearance of sandalwood Shiva lingam. The paste is removed only once every year on the third day during the month of Vaisakha (April- May).The foundation of the temple is related to the well-known story of the demon-king Hiranyakashipu and his son, Prahalada, who was also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. This mount derives its name from Lord Shiva, and is enshrined in the form of a naturally occurring (swayamboo) lingam in the shape of a Rudraksha seed.
