What really matters – Arjuna Vishada Yoga 11

In our previous post we saw that Duryodhana was stricken with doubt as to whether the army at his disposal was sufficient enough to take on the Pandava army and whether the grand sire Bhishma was fully committed to his side. We also discussed how it is human nature that we are rarely contented with whatever we have and always feel that we need more. We now see the next verse where Duryodhana gathers himself and addresses his troops..

ayanesu ca sarveshu yatha-bhagam avasthitah
bhismam evabhirakshantu bhavantah sarva eva hi

“All of you must now give full support to Grandfather Bhishma, as you stand at your respective strategic points of entrance at your respective military formations”

bhavantah sarve-all of you: eva hi – must indeed: abhirakshantu - completely protect: bhishma eva- Bhishma only: sarveshu ayaneshu cha - at all strategic entrance points: avasthitah-situated: yatha bhaagam – at your respective military formations

Duryodhana tells Dronacharya that all the different warriors who were surrounding the commander Bhishma must be extremely vigilant. While Bhishma was busy in warfare, Duryodhana wanted to make sure that he was being backed up properly in all directions by the different warriors so that his safety was assured.

Duryodhana felt that the most important person in his side in the battlefield was Bhishma. As long as the Commander in Chief of the Army was safe and protected, the rest would be automatically taken care of, since notwithstanding his earlier doubts, he felt that Bhishma would fight to ensure the victory of the Kaurava army.

In life, it is necessary for us to identify what is really important – what REALLY matters.. Once, after a busy day of work, a mother was ready to sit down for some rest and relaxation, but her young daughter has other plans – she asks her mother to read her a story. The mother tries to get her to wait for a few minutes but the little girl is very insistent – as little girls normally are!

The mother was reading a magazine and in the back page there is a full page picture of the world. She tears this into several pieces and tells her daughter to put the picture together after which she would read her a story. The mother thinks to herself that this task would take the girl a while during which she would get some time to relax. A very short time later, the little girl announces that she has finished the task. The surprised mother sees that it was indeed so!

When she asked her daughter how she managed to do this so quickly, the daughter replies that on the reverse side of the page was a picture of a little girl. She said, “Mommy, when I got the little girl together, the whole world came together”

Similarly, in our life, we need to know which are the important things – the things that really matter, because very often, we are obsessed with so many things that take up a lot of our time but don’t amount to much. Fathers spend more time at their offices and less time watching their young children grow. Even children these days are burdened with so much academics and home work and have very little time for sports or fine arts. Still others are choked with all their parents aspirations that they have no time to stand and stare – watch nature or just relax! The examples are many and surely, each of us is guilty of having done this on numerous occasions in our own lives!

Once we are able to focus on the important things around us and get them in order, automatically the other things will fall in place.

Just so, in this verse, Duryodhana exhorts Drona and his warriors to ensure that they protect their Commander in Chief Bhishma – once Bhishma was protected carefully, Duryodhana believed that their army would certainly win.
