Why is Mantara worshipped – Gitaaonline Answers

Mantara (also Kooni in some versions) in the Hindu epic Ramayana, is a servant who convinced Kaikeyi, on the eve of Rama’s coronation that Rama should be exiled and it was her son Bharata who deserved the throne.

Did Kooni persuade Kaikeyi by using fear as a motivator ? She made the queen fear for her future enough to change her king’s wishes. Kaikeyi looked very uncomfortable with what she had to do, but knew that it was the only way her life would not change.

Guruji has asked Satsanghis to contribute their responses to the following question..

In India, many people worship “Mantara” (also known as Kooni / hunchback) of the Ramayana. Why do people worship her?

    Hi Sowmya
In my opinion Mantara was not a great person to be worshiped , but we can say that she was the first key instrument to the entire Ramayana and because of that we got a great bhakta like Hanuman.

Is manthara being worshipped? I sincerely, am not aware of this, but one can certainly say that without the character of manthara, there is no Ramayana!

The Ram Avatar is unique and great as the Lord showed as to how a man should conduct himself and live on earth and which made poets like Kannadasan write “Oruvannaku ulagil oru tharam enna ulagakkuku kaatayia avatharam, “raama avatharam”(ஒருவனுக்கு உலகில் ஒரு தாரம் என உலகுக்கு காட்டிய அவதாரம் ராம அவதாரம் – For one man in this world there is only one woman for him)

It paved the way for us to know about the brotherly love, affection and attachment like that of Lakshmana, the greatness of Bharata, who renounced the kingdom and the pleasures of it and lived like an asetic away from Ayodhya in Nandigram!

As Rama proceeded to the forest one comes to know and hear about the greats !
Guha, Sabari and not to mention the great pavana putra Hanumaan who is the epitome of service, surrender to the Almighty. It also showed us the might of Hanuman.

It also revealed the greatness of Ravana , as one who mastered the Vedas and as a great bhakta of Shiva.
Ramayana also gave the world what surrender to the Lord means, in the form of Vibeeshana!
One may worship Manthara or not , but definitely thank her for making Kaikeyi remember and ask the boons at the appropriate time !

  3. Namaskar Sowmyaji. Like all, i was surprised that, is Mantara worshipped? Mantara became an instrument to show the greatness of Rama to the world; Because Indra asked her to do that to kill Ravana, she did it.

She should be worshipped for these reasons? I feel Mantara is form of Maya. When this clouds one’s mind, all the discrimination, knowledge, dharma and all goodness vanishes. ‘Me’ and ‘mine’ alone remains. Sorrow becomes never ending.

people might be praying to her as the form Maya not to blind them and bind them into life.

    My prostrations to Guruji.
    Pranams and love

  4. Namaskar Sowmyaji!

On further thought on the question:

Whomsoever is under the sway of Maya, who is ignorance, who doesnt know the difference between Shreyas and Preyas, they all worship Mantara indirectly (being in Tamas).

    Pranams

  5. All devas were troubled by Rakshas living in the forest, when Devas heard the coronation of Rama , they got worried and they requested Ma Sarada to convince Manthara to twist the matters happening in Ayodhya(During the Rajayabhishek of Rama)so that Rama can go to forest to protect those rishis who were doing Yagnas for Devas. Manthara is worshipped because all that what Manthara said to Kaikeyi was Ma Saraswati not Manthara and also Devas knew Lord Rama is an avatara and is unaffected by worldly matters, hence they sent Sarada in the buddhi of Manthara .On the instruction of Kaikeyee, Rama goes to forest and kills the wicked asuras and these Devas receive the offerings from Yagna.

Mantra just like Judas played the role that was her destiny to fulfil. Jesus waited for his betrayal – it was essential and Judas delivered it perhaps knowingly. So it is with Mantra.
